It All Starts With An Introduction…

Have you ever played that game where you look at someone, maybe you are on a train or in a restaurant, and you try to guess who they are and what they do? You don’t know this person at all but you sit there and make up a fictional backstory for them. Admit it, we’ve all done it. If you haven’t I’m going to give you the opportunity to in a second.

You look across the room and see this guy…

What is his backstory?

Who does he do?

Why is he in this café?

Why is he so damn happy?

Well here’s the thing you don’t have to guess…

With a little bit of introduction you now have a better idea of who I am, what I do and what I am passionate about. While I’m not recommending that you do this in public (it may be seen as a bit creepy) what I am wanting you consider is that life is full of strangers and these strangers can be opportunities that can help you.

I reminisce on my days at university and remember doing those ice breaker activities in Week 1 but most that I have done have either lead to friendships or even job opportunities. In my Business Communications class, my lecturer remembered me as “That Film Guy” (not to be mixed up with Mark Farnell) and via some networking lead me to doing video work with Creativity Australia.

Moreover, my video work from the City of Melbourne came from introducing myself to the world via LinkedIn. At the end of 2015, I was approached by their marketing division, after finding my profile on LinkedIn, to make a mock video for a request to quote. While we did not get the Summer campaign job through networking with their team on LinkedIn, as well as leaving an impression from our mock video, we were asked to do their Winter Campaign videos and here we are still a year later making social media videos for them.

Ultimately, what I am trying to say here is put yourself out there. Introduce yourself to the world and take hold of opportunities – don’t let people guess who you are. Making a short introduction video only takes about 10mins to make, making a LinkedIn profile takes around the same time or better yet making an About.me profile takes only a couple of minutes. So what are you doing? Go out and make some media!
